Weekend Wander: Maniwaya Island

Marinduque is a province in the Philippines that is part of Region 4B which is also known as Mimaropa region. The province of Marinduque is considered the heart of the Philippines geographically and figuratively. Based on Luzon Datum of 1911, Marinduque is the geographical center of the Philippines. Marinduque is a ‘heart-shaped‘ island with a total land area of 952.58 square kilometers.

Maniwaya Island

I was intigued by this ‘heart-shaped‘ island so I do some research to see if there is a story behind this.

Based on Filipino Legends, the island is the mark of love between Marina and Garduk who went to the sea and drowned for their love was forbidden on land. The earth felt so sorry for them so an island rose up on the place where they drown and called it Marinduque. A sad love story ended to become a paradise.

Maniwaya Beach

The province of Marinduque is composed of islands and one of those is Maniwaya. Some people says that Maniwaya is like Boracay 20 years ago (those days that Boracay was not yet that commercialized) and once you get there, surely you’ll comeback.

There are lots of things you can do in this beautiful island. Enjoy the white sand, dip in to the crystal clear water, and take some shots.

Another thing that you must do when you visit Marinduque is to go Island Hopping and visit Palad Sandbar. Palad Sandbar is a one of a kind place for beach lovers. Combining powdery sand and crystal clear water, the sandbar has its beauty of its own that every tourist will be captivated. Note that the best time to go on island hopping is morning for the sandbar sinks during high tides.

Another attraction that you must visit is the Ungab Rock Formation. It was called Ungab Rock Formation because it is located in Sitio Ungab which is in eastern side of Mongpong Island. The locals also called this rock formation as ‘Balogbog Baboy’.
